thinkspiration Thursdays: Call a Friend

When you need a boost, phone a friend.

By Rachel & the thinkThin team

Like you, we’re inspired by great thinkers from the past and present. So we thought we’d share their insight with you, reflect on its meaning and hear what you have to say. We believe that when it comes to living a full, healthy, happy life, it’s all about how you “think.”

“A friend is one before whom I may think aloud.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I am a pretty transparent person. I speak my mind to complete strangers. I have strong opinions. And you can usually know what I’m thinking from my facial expression. But it’s only with true friends that I can completely and totally feel safe and comfortable revealing my true self and speaking directly from my heart. There’s something about friendship — truly good friendship — that makes it so easy to tell them what we’re thinking and trust that they won’t judge us, and accept us for who we really are. And that’s a beautiful thing. Friendships may be fleeting, but when you have a good one, it’s important not to let it slip away. It doesn’t matter if it’s been weeks or years. Give her a call. You won’t regret it!

thinkThin Thursday Contest: Post a comment, reflection or story below about your bestie to enter to win a thinkThin hat and box of your favorite bars. Winner will be selected Friday, April 29 at 12:00 PM (PST). Good luck!

My bestie knows exactly what to say and when to say it. She doesn't sugar-coat her views, but she's always on my side. We've been friends for almost a decade regardless of distance. For me, true friendship is about being able to think aloud to someone with complete freedom and honesty and it's a beautiful thing. I think I'll call her today! :)

I have known my best friend from birth. She is 15 years older than I am. Somehow the years don't seperate us as you may think rather they give us more perspective on life. When my mom was extremely sick when I was a baby she stayed home from school to care for me. As I got a little older she found it difficult to not mother me which I resisted at great measures. I loved her dearly though. She gave me 2 nieces and 2 nephews. I admired her and looked up to her so much. Then I married and gave her 2 nephews and a niece. She calls me for advice and I do the same. We have gone from being sisters to being best of friends. My married life we have lived 1500 miles apart but spent countless hours on the phone to share life together. Last April we felt lead as a family to move closer to home and packed up our things and moved less than an hour away from my sister. We still spend a good deal of time on the phone as life doesn't allow us to get together as often as we would like but it is such a joy to see her face to face at least once a month. She is my sister but most of all she is my best friend.

I have had the same best friend for 17 years, since I was 12 years old. We might not see each other everyday or even talk, we might not agree on the same things, and we might be at different places in life, but no matter what she will always be there for me & I will always be there for her! Whether it's an afternoon lunch or a 2am "I need a friend" phonecall, I always know that I can count on my best friend. She is as close to me as family! I love you, Jenny!!

Me and my bestfriend have known each other a little over 8 years. We are complete opposites and I think that is what grounds us and keeps us close. She is type A personality and I am type B personality. We are from different ethnic backgrounds with different upbringings. I am quiet, reserved and the listener; she is loud, outgoing and a talker. We are Yin and Yang and I would have it no other way. She talked me into doing my first marathon (I was not a runner). Something I never thought I could do or would do. She was waiting on me when i crossed thr finish line. When I am with her she can always makes me laugh out loud! I believe my story with her is just beginning!

Frienship comes easy, we should never have to work at it or have it be uncomfortable. It is not the quanity of friends one has but the quailty.

My best friend is my sister. We are lucky in that regard. Nobody can understand me as well as she does, because nobody else grew up in the same situations. We are always there for each other

My best friend in the entire world is my older sister by two years. Growing up I always had someone to play with when I was shy around other kids and she constantly watched out for me in school. Now that we're older and in our mid-twenties she is that person I can to and celebrate in times of happiness and she is the shoulder I cry on in those of sadness. This weekend she is visiting me out of state and I now appreciate our friendship more than ever. Plus, we have awesome matching BFF bracelets :)

My best friend and I have been friends for over eight years. In high school.. you would never see us apart. Considering that college came our way and we went our separate ways... we still try and keep in touch. However, it can be difficult. Therefore, we make sure every time she is home.. we make the effort to see each other! You can honestly never replace your first friend and our friendship still means a lot to us!!!!
